Preparation & workmanship

Exterior finishes only last when the substrate is properly prepared. We clean, treat and prime surfaces correctly, apply premium exterior paint systems in the right conditions, and detail edges and trims cleanly for a crisp, durable result.

Who it's for

Exterior work is as much about protection as appearance, and the right specification depends on what the building is made of and how exposed it is.

Period and rendered houses

Stucco fronts, painted render and pebbledash that have weathered, hairline-cracked or gone chalky. These want a breathable masonry system and honest repair work before any colour goes on.

Homes with extensive timber

Sash windows, fascias, soffits, bargeboards, porches and cladding. Timber is where exterior decoration usually fails first, so it gets the most attention: cutting out soft wood, resin repairs, knotting, priming and full undercoating.

Owners preparing to sell or let

A tired frontage is the first thing a buyer or tenant sees. A well-executed exterior refresh, with clean lines at the windows and a considered door colour, changes the impression of the whole property.

Flats, blocks and managing agents

Communal frontages, railings, entrance doors and rear elevations where access and resident notice have to be planned properly alongside the decoration itself.

Shopfronts and commercial frontages

Fascias, signage surrounds, shutters and entrance areas that need to look sharp without closing the business — usually handled outside trading hours.

How the process works

Exterior projects are planned around the building and the weather, in this order.

  1. 01

    Survey and specification

We inspect each elevation at close quarters where we can, identify failing coatings, movement cracks, rot and any pointing or gutter issues, and agree how access will be handled. You then get a written specification naming the actual products for each surface.

  2. 02

    Access, protection and preparation

Towers, ladders or scaffolding go up as required and paths, planting, glazing and paving are protected. Surfaces are washed down, loose material scraped back, fungal growth treated, timber repaired, joints raked and filled, and everything bare is stabilised or primed.

  3. 03

    Application in the right conditions

We work with the weather rather than against it, watching temperature, damp surfaces and the time of day so coatings cure properly. Masonry and timber systems are built up in full coats, with cut-in work at reveals, sills and trims done by hand.

  4. 04

    Finish and handover

Access equipment comes down, glass and paving are cleaned off, and we walk the elevations with you from ground level to check the lines and coverage. Any touch-ups are done before we leave the site.

Where we work

South West London & Surrey.

We work across Barnes, Chiswick, Putney and Richmond, and out through Teddington, Hampton Court and Walton-on-Thames. Render, sash windows and front doors on the river side of these areas take a lot of weather, and elevation, access and time of year matter more on the outside of a house than anywhere else — so we look at the property before quoting rather than after. Frequently asked questions

  • What time of year is best for exterior painting?

Spring through to early autumn is ideal, when surfaces dry out properly and temperatures stay above the minimum for the coatings. Work outside that window is possible on sheltered elevations and mild spells, and we will be straightforward with you if conditions mean it is better to wait.

  • How long should an exterior repaint last?

That depends on the substrate, the exposure and the system used. Good masonry coatings on well-prepared render last considerably longer than paint on south-facing or weather-beaten timber, which typically wants attention sooner. We will tell you what to expect for each elevation of your property.

  • Do you deal with rotten timber and cracked render?

Yes. Cutting out and repairing soft timber, resin-filling, raking and filling cracks and treating fungal growth are part of proper exterior work. If we find something structural or a damp source behind the failure, we will point it out rather than paint over it.

  • Do you arrange the scaffolding?

We arrange whatever access the job needs, from ladders and mobile towers to full scaffolding, and include it in the written quotation so there are no surprises later. Where a neighbour's land or a pavement licence is involved, we will flag that at survey.

  • What affects the quotation for exterior work?

The size and height of the elevations, the access arrangements, the amount of repair and preparation needed, the surfaces involved and the coating system specified. We survey the property properly, then send a free written quote setting out each element.

Exterior work often uncovers timber and detail that needs attention before a brush goes anywhere near it. These two services usually run alongside it.

Bespoke Carpentry

Soft window sills, split fascia boards and rotten door frames are best repaired or replaced while the scaffold or access equipment is already up.

Homeowners frequently pair a facade repaint with hallway or reception-room decorating so the property is finished inside and out in one run of work.
