
Fitted carpentry is the most closely inspected paintwork in a house. A wall is seen from across the room; a wardrobe door is seen from a foot away, at eye level, with a hand on the handle, usually with daylight raking down it from a window or a skylight. Every unfilled grain line, every proud pin hole, every brush mark that dried before it flowed out is visible. This is why joinery that has been beautifully made can still disappoint once painted, and why decorators talk about a 'factory finish' as a preparation standard rather than a product.
The good news is that the standard is achievable on site, in an ordinary house in London or Surrey, provided the sequence is respected and nobody is asked to hurry the middle of it.
Why preparation decides everything
Paint on joinery has two jobs: to look flawless and to survive daily use. Both depend on what is underneath. A finish coat cannot fill a texture, it can only follow it — and on the flat, unbroken planes typical of wardrobe doors and cabinet fronts there is nowhere for an imperfection to hide. Preparation on joinery therefore goes further than on walls: it is about making surfaces genuinely flat and closed, and about giving the coating something stable to bond to for years of opening, closing and knocking.
Filling, grain filling and edges
Pin and screw holes are filled, left to shrink and filled again, because a single application almost always sinks. Joints between components are filled and, where movement is likely, caulked with a flexible sealant. Where the joinery is made from timber rather than MDF, the open grain needs closing with a grain filler or a high-build primer that can be flattened back — otherwise the grain pattern telegraphs through even a perfect topcoat. Cut MDF edges are the other classic failure point: machined edges are far more absorbent than the faces, so they are sealed and primed separately, then sanded, or they dry to a visibly different sheen and a slightly furry texture.
Knots, resin and stain blocking
Softwood knots and resinous timber will bleed tannins through a pale finish, sometimes weeks or months after the job looks complete, and no amount of extra topcoat will stop it. Knots are treated and sealed with a suitable blocking primer before anything else goes on. The same applies to any water staining or previous coating of unknown type — a stain-blocking primer takes a fraction of the time and effort it takes to strip and redo a wardrobe front.
Priming and building the surface
Primer on joinery is the surface, not just an undercoat. The right primer bonds to the substrate, sands beautifully, and gives a uniform base so the finish colour reads evenly across faces, edges and mouldings. On a high-standard job the primer is applied, flattened back thoroughly, and any defect revealed by that sanding is filled and spot-primed before finishing begins. Cabinetry that will take real wear also benefits from an adhesion primer where the existing surface is a factory-applied melamine or a previously lacquered finish, because ordinary primer will not grip it.
Not all fitted joinery is destined to be painted, of course — veneered and stained units are finished quite differently, and it is worth deciding which route a piece is taking before it is built, because the construction and the material specification follow from that decision.
Brushed or sprayed on wardrobes, alcove units and cabinetry
Both methods produce excellent work; they suit different circumstances. The full comparison sits in spray painting versus brush and roller, but the joinery-specific points are these.
Spraying comes into its own on large flat fronts and repeated components — a run of wardrobe doors, kitchen cabinetry, a bank of drawers — because it lays down an even film with no brush texture and no heavy build-up in the corners. It is also the better answer on intricate profiles: beading, fluting, glazing bars and fielded panels, where a brush inevitably loads paint into the detail. The trade-off for that quality is set-up. Spraying needs the room masked and isolated properly, dust control, extraction and ventilation, and a working sequence that keeps the household out of the space while it happens.
Brushing and rolling remains the right choice in occupied homes where a single alcove unit, a set of shelves or a bookcase is being decorated alongside the walls, where masking an entire room would be disproportionate, and where the finish will be seen at arm's length rather than as an unbroken plane. Applied well — good tools, correct thinning where appropriate, de-nibbing between coats — a brushed finish on shelving or a fitted bookcase is entirely convincing and far easier to touch in later.
One practical difference is worth knowing before you choose: a sprayed panel is usually best re-sprayed as a whole component for an invisible repair, whereas brushed joinery can be touched in locally. Either way, keeping a record of the exact product, sheen and colour used makes future maintenance straightforward.
Sheen levels and living with the finish
Sheen is a durability decision as much as an aesthetic one, and joinery is the wrong place to chase a fashionable flat look. Higher sheen levels are harder, more washable and more resistant to fingermarks and knocks; flatter finishes look soft and refined in photographs and mark where hands go.
- Eggshell: the usual choice for wardrobes, alcove units, panelling and shelving — low sheen, wipeable, and forgiving of a slightly imperfect surface.
- Satin: a step up in sheen and toughness, sensible on doors, banisters and anything handled constantly.
- Gloss: hardest and most reflective, traditional on period joinery and staircases, but it shows every ripple in the surface beneath, so it demands the best preparation.
- Cabinet and two-pack coatings: used where daily wear is heaviest, such as kitchen doors and drawer fronts, and applied over a properly primed and flattened surface rather than as a shortcut.
- Flat and dead-flat finishes: beautiful on walls, but poorly suited to anything that gets touched — best kept off joinery in family homes.
Durability also depends on giving the coating time. A finish that is technically dry can still be soft for days, and cabinet doors closed on each other too early will stick and mark. Part of running the job properly is telling you plainly when the joinery can be used and when it can be loaded.
Sequencing carpentry and decorating
Most avoidable problems on joinery projects are scheduling problems. The order that works is: build and fit the carpentry, allow it to acclimatise in the heated room, complete all filling, sanding and priming, decorate the walls and ceiling, then finish the joinery — and fit the handles, hinges and internal fittings last, so ironmongery is not painted around and internal shelving is not marked.
Where spraying is involved, the joinery is best finished before the room is furnished and while masking is still practical, which usually means bringing the decorator into the conversation while the carpentry is still being planned rather than once it is installed.
